Rodent Awareness Week 2020: Rat Infestations are Surging

Rodents are entering Vancouver BC homes during the pandemic - OnSite Pest ControlRodent Awareness Week is here, and there’s no better time to discuss the ongoing increase in rodent infestations in Vancouver BC, and worldwide. Since the start of the pandemic, rat and mouse infestations have increased to the point where even the CDC commented on it. This is because restaurants and cafes were ordered to limit operations. Rodents that once relied on these establishments for food were suddenly left high and dry, which drove them to infest residential properties more and more. Rodent infestations aren’t just gross, they can be dangerous as well. The team at Onsite Pest Control is here to share their top tips for keeping rats and mice out of your home this fall and all year long.

The Surge of Rodent Activity During COVID-19

The pandemic has brought about many changes not only in our lives but in the lives of rodents as well. The shelter in place shutdowns caused an uptick in residential rodent sightings as rats and mice became bolder in their hunt for resources. This has since caused an uptick in infestations and rodent-spread issues. While their presence may be more prevalent than ever, you thankfully do not need to worry about rodents transmitting COVID-19 to you or your family.

However, it’s still important to be wary of rodent problems for several reasons. One, rats and mice can transmit other dangerous diseases, including salmonellosis, hantavirus, and more. Second, a rodent infestation can cause structural damage to your property. Especially with rats at a higher aggression, they won’t hesitate to build nests and gnaw items indoors.

7 Rodent Prevention Tips

Rodents can get indoors easier than you want to believe. This is why it’s important to learn how to seal off your home to these rodents. Our top tips include:

  1. Put outdoor garbage bags in metal garbage cans with securely fitted lids to stop them from feeding on contents.
  2. Seal off cracks and crevices around openings. Mice can squeeze inside holes the size of a dime.
  3. Securely store all food in metal or glass containers with tight-fitting lids.
  4. Clean inside the house and around the garden. Less clutter means fewer places to hide.
  5. Clean up pet food and bird seed debris, and store pet food in robust containers with fitted lids, preferably above ground level.
  6. If you have a compost heap don’t include organic food waste, as this will attract them.
  7. Inspect your garage, attic, crawlspaces, and vents for potential rodent hiding spots.
